Summer 2009 Victoria Curling Club Update

VCC Picture 1 2007

THE VICTORIA CURLING CLUB
“Celebrating our 90th Anniversary 2009/2010″

To All Victoria Curling Club Members, Curlers, and Friends:

The September long weekend is still a long ways away, we hope!! but as it approaches so does another Annual Meeting and Sign-up Night for curling at the Victoria Curling Club. I certainly hope everyone is enjoying the summer regardless of the weather and I hope that you seriously consider The “VIC” when making that decision on where to curl this winter.

Our Annual Meeting and Sign-up Night will be held on Wednesday September 9th, 2009 beginning at 7:00 p.m. followed by a short meeting at 8:30 p.m. to receive the committee reports for 2008/2009, have a look at the club’s financial statement, elect the officers and executive for 2009/2010, and welcome any new business from the floor. We will also receive  applications for membership and accept deposits for our Victoria Mixed Leagues (Fridays and/or Saturdays). Most of our leagues were full last year so please make every effort to attend to avoid any disappointment. Please see the accompanying flyer for prices and contacts. And be sure to take advantage of our “team pricing” where adding additional curlers up to maximum of 6 will decrease the price and ensure your team has enough players to last out the year.

There is no increase to membership fees for the upcoming season even as the cost of running this facility continues to escalate. And as we continue to provide an affordable well maintained facility for you to curl and socialize in you may wonder “What can you do to help the club?” Well…. Solicit new members/teams from your friends and family, encourage your place of business to organize fun spiels, notify us of any sponsorship opportunities, and volunteer your time if you can. We welcome all members, curlers, and friends to join in on the meeting and encourage you to express your opinions and concerns.  This is YOUR club so let’s hear from you on how we can better improve this curling facility,

I am happy to say all of our yearly ice renters are back with us again this season and many of them are looing for members as well. If you know of anyone that may want to curl in one of our renter leagues please contact Ken Parfeniuk at 582-1214. Our yearly contract ice rentals generate much needed revenue for the club and positively impacts our bar and canteen sales. We also have seen a dramatic increase in memberships already sold and a number of inquiries so please contact us immediately if you will not be able to attend on September 9th.

The 2009/2010 season will mark the 90th Anniversary of the Victoria Curling Club and we invite you to join our facility for a long and exciting season. We continue to make improvements to the club and I invite you to return or become a member. New members please give us a try. I’m sure you will find us one of the friendliest clubs around. We’re very much a volunteer operated curling facility and were proud of our club at 948 William Avenue. You will enjoy being a member of the Victoria.

Curling ice is available for rent, Casual, Evenings, Hourly, or on a 6-month rental contract for some very reasonable rates. If you or someone you know is looking for ice for that company bonspiel, starting up a league, or just running a fun family bonspiel, we have 5 sheets of ice ready to go. We need your help in seeking new ice rentals, both yearly and casual. And if you need help in starting that league or organizing that fun bonspiel we’re here to help.

Whether you’re a complete or partial team, an individual, male or female, young or old, beginner, novice or experienced at the game of curling, we have the right league to fit you in. If you have any questions or concerns about the Victoria Curling Club don’t hesitate to give me a call. And if you can’t make sign-up night and have a full team let me know a.s.a.p. Have a GREAT curling year wherever you decide to curl this year, and I hope to see you during the winter at Victoria. The club opens for the winter on Monday October 12th, 2009. We look forward to a 90th great year of curling at the “VIC”.

On behalf of the Victoria Curling Club Board of Directors.

                 Mitchell Tarapasky, Club Secretary

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR MEMBERS, PATRONS, AND FRIENDS

Another curling season has just come to a close and on behalf of President Rod Gorman and the Board of Directors of the Victoria Curling Club let me Thank-you for your patronage and support of the club over the past several seasons. Congratulations to the Conacher Team on capturing the Club Championship and to all aggregate and group winners.

The club continues to operate on solid financial ground and without carrying any debt. That as much as anything speaks to the longevity of this club and the dedication of its volunteers and members. Our members continue to support the club by way of paying memberships, giving donations, value in kind services, deliveries, advertising, printing, volunteering, amongst many other ways and it is truly a big part of our success and not left unnoticed. We derive further much needed revenue each year from fundraising including the Grey Cup Pool Tickets and very much appreciate your support selling and buying tickets. Our most recent club fundraiser the raffling of our 50” LCD HDTV was won by Brad Benoit of Winnipeg and was drawn on April 24th at the Men’s Banquet.

We have strived over the years to keep our curling fees down while managing to maintain this facility which next season will celebrate its 90th Anniversary. Our 1 night a week men’s fees of $230.00 for 2009/2010 have not changed from last season due to this recessionary period we find ourselves in even as we receive news of a much needed upgrade and maintenance to our ice plant that will cost in excess of $10,000.00. We have applied for funding for this project and it is anticipated this financial set back will not affect other areas of the club.

This past season saw this club without canteen services for some period of time, and absent in some areas for about the entire length of the season. We do apologize for the lack of canteen and food services throughout the year. The lack of appreciable business made the operation of the canteen less desirable and costly and was a major factor in the decrease in hours of operation when we were able to acquire a suitable replacement. We would like to inform all of our valued members and customers that we have acquired full canteen services for the 2009/2010 season and don’t anticipate the same problems. We fully realize the absence of adequate canteen services was a bone of contention with many of our members but at the same time hope you can also appreciate the difficulties of running a curling club canteen in today’s economic climate.

As I said earlier the club will celebrate its 90th anniversary next season and we have struck a 90th anniversary committee headed by President Elect Bryce McEwen. It is expected we will have a number of special events marking that anniversary. From hosting the Canada/U.S. Goodwill Visit in December, to possibly hosting our own spring bonspiel, to a gala dinner next May we are expecting next year will be a busy and exciting one and we hope all of our past members are intending to return for the 09/10 season. We are also selling 90th anniversary Golf Shirts at the low low price of $30.00. Get yours before they’re all gone.

As membership chairman I struggle each year to retain most of the current membership while trying to attract new teams to the 3 nights of men’s we offer each year. For the most part we have been about 90% full with Monday’s coming up short the last 3 years. I’d like to think the club is adequately maintained and the ice is better than average most nights and consistently keen. I also know from talking to club members that most find the club quite friendly and we are at the bottom of the scale in terms of membership fees and bar prices. So hopefully that’s enough and a good reason we have the success we’ve been having, as well as a good reason we’ll be seeing you and your team back again next year.

The Annual Meeting and Sign Up Night for the 2009/10 season will be Wednesday September 9th, 2009 beginning at 7:00 p.m. If your team has already made the decision to curl at the Vic next year or decide before September 9th you can always let me know a.s.a.p. We will be accepting deposits and membership applications from this point forward, first come, first served with a minimum deposit of $230.00. Returning club teams with a deposit will have priority but fully paid teams will take precedent over everyone.

In closing and on behalf of the VCC Board of Directors please enjoy the off season and have a great summer enjoying your favorite activity for this time of year. September seems like a long ways away but summers have a history of disappearing before you know it. Again Thank-you for your past support of the Victoria Curling Club and we certainly hope to see you part of what should be a very exciting and extraordinary 90th year for our members and friends of the “Vic”.

            Mitchell Tarapasky, Club Secretary

Men’s Windup & TV Raffle

Don’t forget the Men’s Windup is next week, on Friday, April 24th. There will be a great meal (Chinese), drinks, prizes and probably a game of poker or two.

And it will be your last chance to get tickets for the TV raffle as the draw takes place that night! The Stanley Cup Playoffs will look great on that TV, so get down to the club, get your tickets, and take it home!

See you at the Vic!
