January is Curling Month in Manitoba!

For the second year in a row, January 2010 is officially Curling Month in Manitoba, as recently declared by Eric Robinson, Minister responsible for Sport. And that means it’s a busy month for curling in the Province, and at the Vic.

Three teams from the Vic are trying to find out if it really is worth the trip to Steinbach – for the 2010 Safeway Men’s Curling Championship in February. They will be competing in the city of Winnipeg zone playdowns scheduled for January 12-17.

Good luck to the Jim Conacher team, made up of Jim, Grant Buckowski, Lionel Bernhard, Rob Skabar and fifth man Blaine McLaren. These guys gave Vic Peter’s super senior squad all he could handle in the senior men’s zones, and could go on a good run.  Dan Dixon, supported by Rob Atkins, Graham Grimes, and Rob Gartner, along with the Collin Sundell team, with Bryce J. McEwen, David Kammerlock, Curtis Connon and fifth man David Chalmers round out the other two teams trying to earn a spot at the Select or the Tankard (if you’ve ever played with a corn broom, you know what I’m talking about).

While some are off chasing their provincial championship dreams, the Vic will be hosting 8 draws of the MCA Ladies bonspiel, on January 15 & 16.

Don’t forget to get your entry for the MCA Men’s Bonspiel in by the January 14th deadline. Curl Manitoba WILL NOT be extending the deadline this year. Curling starts on the 28th, but the real MCA starts on the 27th, upstairs at the Vic for the Calcutta.

See you at the Vic!

Learn to Curl Open House #2

The second Victoria Curling Club Learn to Curl Open House is scheduled for Saturday, November 21, from 7:30 until close. All are welcome – children as young as 8 can learn to curl, and it’s never too late for men, women and seniors to learn the game.

If you missed the first open house – don’t worry, we’ll start you at the beginning. If you were at the first open house, you won’t have to sit through the beginner clinic again – we will have a couple of sheets open for you to throw rocks and progress the skills you already have. If you already curl at a different curling club, bring out that co-worker who’s always asking you about your curling games, they secretly want to curl but are afraid to ask.

Please forward this to anybody you know who might be interested in learning to curl.

The CCA is making an effort to get people curling, and have created a website to help you get started. Visit startcurling.ca to learn all about this incredible game.

Follow this link to find 7 short videos that will help you get a head start on your curling lessons!

Victoria Curling Club Newsletter – November 09

MCA Men’s Bonspiel – I have put up the poster and sign-up sheets for the 122nd MCA Men’s Bonspiel. Many changes have been made to this year’s bonspiel including a later date in January. The bonspiel runs from Thursday January 28th to Monday February 1st, 2010.

That’s right Thursday to Monday. The bonspiel has been reduced to 6 games guaranteed and the bonspiel is over 2 days earlier. A survey done 4 years ago strongly indicated the reason for dropping participation was due to the length of the bonspiel and the time off required from work. It is hoped that numbers will increase to bring us back to the perfect 512 team draw. The bonspiel is all 8 end games now and other than a shorter spiel the draw, meals at the clubs, are all the same. The bonspiel has an early entry fee of $250.00 if you enter before Christmas.

The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board on the main floor so sign up and leave your entry at the bar with your cheque (made payable to the MCA). I will take all entries left there before Christmas down to the MCA Office for you. If you require a competitor card let me know or go online to www.curlmanitoba.org.

Important to note that all male members from the Victoria Curling Club…..including ALL rental leagues, are eligible to enter this The World’s Largest Bonspiel.

Club Finance – At the recently held Annual Meeting in September the club reported a good surplus for 08/09 which bodes well for the future of this curling club and its operation. Of course with that comes the usual expenses annually that operating a curling facility have and this year is no exception. The Ice Plant requires a major overhaul (just completed) which is required every 4 year’s, and maintaining the ice plant this year will cost in excess of $12,000.00, so much for that surplus. The good news is that the club applied for and was granted $4,000.00 from the MCA Development fund which will help in paying down that expense. The club and its members truly appreciate the significant contribution by the MCA towards this project.

The club remains in a healthy financial position and continues to keep the club well maintained. Many more improvements are on the way for your club so stay tuned.

***

Canteen/Lunch Counter – We have a brand new canteen operator this season. Your patronage and support of the canteen/lunch counter is greatly appreciated. Please do your best to give Patty and her staff some business during the season. And PLEASE No outside food or drink is allowed on the premises.

***

Grey Cup Tickets – Again this year you will have been asked to sell Grey Cup Tickets for the club, an annual fund raiser that provides in excess of $5,000.00 annually to the operation of this not for profit facility. We thank all those members who have bought and sold these ticket for us over the years. If you still have tickets in your possession please drop them by the club before the big game. And if you haven’t somewhere to watch the game why not watch it at the Vic on our new 50” Plasma Television set

 ***

Big Screen TV – We have recently purchased a Samsung 50” Plasma 1080p High Definition Television Set to add to your entertainment pleasure while enjoying that frosty cold beverage in our clubrooms. We will be adding an HD signal shortly so we hope you will stay and enjoy your favorite sporting event often. And you could win this beautiful new TV to take home in April!! We will be selling raffle tickets for this TV and they will sell for 3 for $5 and the winner takes this baby home at the end of the year. Now wouldn’t that look nice at your house?

 ***

Ice Conditions – Our ice making staff lead by our Head Ice Technician Lenny Krystik strive daily to make the best sheet of ice possible in this facility and they are looking for your help in keeping the ice at optimum conditions at all times. Please keep your shoes clean at all times and only put them on just prior to entering the ice house. Also please refrain from putting hands, knees, etc on the ice and make sure your curling equipment from your gripper to your broom is in very good shape. Ice conditions are often affected only by the state of the equipment and the curlers themselves.

THIS IS IMPORTANT TO THE QUALITY OF THE CURLING ICE

There is a document on the bulletin board and in the locker room entitled “Picks on Championship Ice” that applies to club ice as well. Have a read and see how much YOU affect the curling ice.

  ***

Membership Fees – Men’s membership fees are due before the end of the first round of curling which is ONLY 4 WEEKS AWAY. Please see Ken Parfeniuk to pay your club dues or payment plans can be arranged. Please note: That to be eligible for the Club Championship you MUST have your entire teams fee ($920.00) paid in full by the end of the first round. Because of the discrepancy in number of teams that will be the week of December 7th for all nights concerned. Questions and/or concerns can be directed to the Membership Chairman Mitchell Tarapasky 897-6054.

 ***

Golf Shirts – The club is selling 90th Anniversary Golf Shirts this year for $30.00 taxes in. The shirts in various colors are on display and sold at the bar. Get yours today before they’re all gone.

 ***

Club Advertising – Another big revenue generator here is club advertising and we do have options available to you and/or your company/business. We sell advertising on our bumpers, scoreboards, signboard, roster book, and soon to come on our website. A complete advertising package can be purchased for as little as $300 a year!! Please approach any executive member if you are at all interested and Thanks in advance for you support of this curling facility.

Goodwill Curling Visit to St. Paul – Each year curlers in St. Paul and Manitoba get together, alternately in St. Paul and Winnipeg, to participate in a truly social bonspiel between the U.S. and Canada. This event has been proudly going on for 58 years and this year’s event, the battle for the Larry Piper Memorial Trophy is here at the Victoria on December 4, 5 and 6.

We are still looking for more participants at a cost of only $140.00 (Canadian Funds) which covers your cost and the cost of hosting 1 American. This is a fantastic event and is about as much fun as any curler can handle. Our hosts from the U.S. treat us with the utmost in hospitality when we have visited them and we want to return the favor in spades. Many a friendship has been created over the years and you will remember this event for a long time. If you want more information, or the wife will let you go? Call Mitchell at 897-6054 or email mitcht@mts.net Compete info is on the club bulletin board or on our website including a complete itinerary of events.

 ENTRIES STILL BEING ACCEPTED

Ice Rental – Ice Rental has increased over the years at the Vic and we would like to thank all of our weekly contract Ice Rentals for the year. We appreciate your business and patronage and if the club can ever be of any assistance to your league(s) please just let us know. We hope you our enjoying our curling facility

We also offer casual ice rental at some very competitive prices for your company bonspiel, family outing, Christmas party, or special event. Prime slots are open every other Saturday night, or weekday afternoons. We can help with any function you may want to put together. Call club manager Ken Parfeniuk 582-1214 for more information.

Rule ChangesThe club rules and regulations are posted next to the main draw board and on the bulletin board in the locker room. This year there are several changes to the club rules that all teams should be aware of. A copy of the rule changes are also posted next to the main draw board.

TEAM SEEDING AND DRAW FORMAT

 3. The first round will be a full round robin where each team in the league plays each other team in the league once. The draw into this group will be random and done in such a way as to ensure that all teams have equal chance at each position in the draw.

3.1 The second round of league play will consist of two groups of five teams. The “A” group will contain the five teams having accumulated the most points from the full round robin seeded according to their point totals from the first round. The “B” group will contain the remaining five teams from the full round robin seeded according to their point totals from the first round. Each group will play a round robin. Crossover games between the groups will be needed to accommodate a full schedule of 10 teams.

3.2 The third round of league play will consist of two groups of five teams. The “A” and “B” group will be adjusted according to the accumulated point totals from the first two rounds for all the ten league teams. No team in a division will displace a team in the other division with an equal number of points. Each group will play a round robin. Crossover games between the groups will be needed to accommodate a full schedule of 10 teams.

**Interpretation: To make the rounds of play on each night more consistent in both the 2nd and 3rd rounds any night with a compliment of >7 teams the draw will consist of an A and B Group. Variations to this rule at 7 teams or less will be left up to the discretion of the draw chairman based on the number of teams on the night in question on any particular year.

 THE GAME

4. All games will not exceed eight (8) ends. All regular league games will be played to a bell of 1 Hour and 50 Minutes only on nights required due to a draw immediately following. (Interpretation: Monday’s due to the Junior Women following immediately after the 5:45 draw) All other nights of play, including the Club Championship, games will be played with no bell. When a bell is necessary pursuant to the above rule teams will finish the end they are playing and play one more end. The end is considered over when the last rock crosses the nearest sweeping (T) line.

 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYDOWN & CONSOLATION

 7.                  The CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP will be held at the end of every year following the final round, and will involve an 8 team, modified double knockout playdown. Teams will qualify for the playdown as follows:

GRAND AGGREGATE OF EACH NIGHT  =  3 TEAMS

A GROUP WINNER OF EACH NIGHT  =  3 TEAMS

WILD CARDS ENTRIES FROM A PLAYOFF =  2 TEAMS

A single knockout wildcard playoff will be scheduled immediately following the final round to determine the final 2 (or 2 +1 in each case of no A Group Runner Up being declared on any of the 3 nights in question – see rule 7.1) to complete an 8 team Club Championship. Any team regardless of their record, who has not already qualified, may enter this playdown for the final wildcard spots into the Club Championship.

7.1    If the Grand Aggregate and A Group winner are the same team, the A Group runner-up will qualify. If there is no A Group runner-up an additional wild card will be added. If a qualifying team declines their spot into the Club Championship the next eligible wild card team shall be awarded that spot. (awarded based on the results of the aforementioned playoff)

Victoria Curling Club 90th Anniversary – This season will mark the 90th year for this volunteer operated curling facility having curled in the Manitoba Curling Association. Over the years the executive and members have prided themselves on being able to operate this club on at times a thin budget and all too often declining revenues, but always with the best interests of its members in mind, and with the focus of maintaining this building and its amenities over the years. In the past several years the club has invested back into this facility in many ways that may or may not be apparent to our patrons. Those improvements have been:

  • Major Ice Plant Overhaul (2009)
  • New Ice King Ice Scraper
  • New windows for bar area and new front door
  • Central Vacuum System
  • Major Ice Plant Maintenance (yearly) including new brine pump
  • Appliance upgrade for canteen area
  • Ice Crimper
  • Air Exchange System for Plant Room
  • Automated Heater Controls
  • New hallway ceilings
  • New flooring for the locker room
  • New Bumpers
  • New Big Screen Television
  • Ladies Washroom Upgrade and Renovation

Amongst these and other items in different areas of the club operation we continue to put any and all surpluses back into the operation and maintenance of this facility. The facility continues today “debt free” as a tribute to the hard work and perseverance of present and past executive committees and support from our valued membership. We thank all of our club patrons and friends as well. We are interested in your comments and suggestions so please forward your feedback to any member of the Victoria Curling Club executive.
